The Three Stages of Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment at Melton Dental House follows a structured three-stage process. Local anaesthetic is administered before treatment begins to manage discomfort at each visit.
Stage One: Nerve Removal
The first stage involves accessing the inside of the tooth and removing the nerve. This is the stage that typically addresses the source of dental pain. Once the nerve has been removed, the tooth itself remains in place.
Stage Two: Measuring and Cleaning the Canal
At the second stage, Dr Phuong measures the full length of the root canal. The canal is then cleaned thoroughly along its entire length to remove bacteria and debris. This step is important for preventing reinfection and ensuring the canal is properly prepared for the filling stage.
Stage Three: Filling the Canal
The root canal is filled to the measured length using a biocompatible material that seals the space where the nerve was. Once the canal is filled, the access point in the tooth is restored with a filling. Dr Phuong typically recommends a crown following root canal treatment to protect the tooth from fracture over time.
What to Expect After Treatment
Some mild discomfort in the days following root canal treatment is normal as the area settles. Dr Phuong will advise on what to expect and when to call the practice if anything is not resolving as expected. A follow-up appointment to place the crown, where recommended, will be scheduled once the tooth has settled.
