General Examination and Hygiene at Melton

Due for a check-up? At Melton Dental House, our experienced team provides comprehensive dental examinations and professional cleanings to maintain your oral health and prevent problems.

When Regular Check-Ups Matter

Regular dental examinations and professional cleanings form the foundation of preventive oral health care. Early detection of decay, gum disease or other issues allows simple, cost-effective treatment before problems progress.

At Melton Dental House, we provide thorough examinations and hygiene services to keep your teeth and gums healthy long-term.

Understanding General Examinations and Hygiene

General dental examinations involve comprehensive assessment of your teeth, gums and oral tissues to identify decay, gum disease, worn enamel or other concerns. X-rays reveal hidden problems between teeth or beneath existing fillings.

Professional hygiene (scale and clean) removes hardened plaque (calculus or tartar) that regular brushing cannot eliminate. Hygienists use specialized instruments to clean above and below the gum line, removing bacterial deposits that cause decay and gum disease.

Combined, these services typically take 45-60 minutes and are recommended every 6 months for most patients, though some require more frequent visits based on gum health or decay risk.

Could Regular Examinations and Hygiene Be Right for You?

At Melton Dental House, we believe every patient deserves individual attention. Regular examinations and professional cleanings are suitable for maintaining oral health and preventing problems before they develop.

Preventive Care and Early Detection

You want to maintain healthy teeth and gums, catch problems early when treatment is simpler, and prevent costly future dental work through regular monitoring.

Plaque and Calculus Build-Up

You notice hardened deposits on teeth, bleeding gums when brushing, or persistent bad breath despite good home care, indicating need for professional cleaning.

High Risk Factors

You have history of gum disease, frequent cavities, dry mouth, diabetes or other conditions increasing oral health risks, requiring more frequent monitoring and cleaning.

Your Examination and Hygiene Journey

Whilst individual needs vary based on your oral health status, here's what you can typically expect:

Your Comprehensive Examination

Our experienced team reviews your medical history, examines teeth and gums for decay or disease, checks existing fillings and restorations, and takes X-rays to identify hidden problems. (Every 6-12 months, approximately 30-45 minutes)

Oral Cancer Screening

We examine your tongue, cheeks, throat and neck for unusual lumps, sores or discolouration that may indicate oral cancer or other conditions requiring further investigation. (Part of examination, approximately 5 minutes)

Professional Cleaning (Scale)

Our hygienist uses specialized instruments to remove hardened plaque and calculus from tooth surfaces and below the gum line where bacteria accumulate. (Same visit, approximately 20-30 minutes)

Polishing

Teeth are polished with gritty paste to remove surface stains and remaining soft plaque, leaving your teeth smooth and clean. (Same visit, approximately 10 minutes)

Treatment Discussion

We explain any findings, discuss recommended treatment for identified problems, answer questions about your oral health, and schedule follow-up appointments if needed. (Same visit, approximately 10-15 minutes)

Home Care Guidance

We provide personalized advice on brushing technique, flossing, and products suited to your needs, helping you maintain oral health between visits. (Same visit, approximately 5 minutes)

Any questions?

Most patients benefit from examinations and cleanings every 6 months. However, those with gum disease, high decay risk, diabetes or other risk factors may need visits every 3-4 months. Your dentist recommends frequency based on your individual oral health status and risk factors.

Yes. Even with excellent home care, most people develop some hardened plaque (calculus) that cannot be removed by brushing or flossing. Professional cleaning removes these deposits before they cause gum disease or decay. Regular cleaning also allows early detection of problems developing between visits.

No. Professional cleaning using proper techniques does not harm tooth enamel. Some patients experience temporary sensitivity afterwards, particularly if significant calculus removal exposes previously covered tooth surfaces. This sensitivity typically resolves within a few days as teeth adjust.
