What is Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment is a dental procedure used to clean a root canal of infection, which helps stop the spread of infection while relieving the patient of pain. But what is a root canal?
Teeth have the part above the gumline that you can see, known as the crown, and the part under the gumline that you cannot see is called the root. Inside the root lies a canal where the pulp and nerve reside. Sometimes the infection can seep in through holes in the teeth or around old cavities. When this happens, bacteria can affect the nerve and pulp, leading to a painful infection.
Root canal treatment is a gentle process where the dentist first creates an opening in the tooth for access to the root, then cleans the root with a gentle process that removes infected parts. Then the root canal is cleaned and filled to protect it from further infection. The opening in the tooth is then filled or we can protect it with a dental crown. A root canal treatment can often be performed in one office visit and patients often experience little to no discomfort.

How Did I Get Here?
There are a few reasons why a root canal may become infected. Often it can be traced to a cavity that has not been treated. This is usually due to a cavity that the patient didn’t know existed, as there was no pain and the hole was very small or in a hidden place. This is one reason why regular dental visits are so important; regular checkups can reveal hidden cavities and decay.
Sometimes an infection can reach the root canal due to an old dental filling that no longer seals the hole of the tooth. Other risks for an infected root canal include old cavities that have grown larger, chipped or cracked teeth or trauma to the mouth. In any case, our staff at Melton Dental House will treat you with compassion to ensure you are as comfortable as possible if you need a root canal treatment.

Signs You Might Need a Root Canal Treatment
Many times, tooth pain from an unknown source is an indication of a root canal infection. However, there are more signs than this, including:

Benefits of Root Canal Treatment
The root canal is a very sensitive area, due to the collection of nerves and blood vessels. When it becomes infected, the tooth and surrounding area may become very sensitive or painful. If the infection goes untreated, it can spread deeper into the jaw and even into the bloodstream. An infection in the root canal cannot resolve itself due to the anatomy of the tooth and tooth root.
Root canal treatment is also called endodontic therapy and is the best treatment to eliminate the infection and the pain that goes with it. Healing a root canal with endodontic therapy will bring relief from pain and stop the spread of infection. If caught early enough, the tooth can be sealed to protect the root and tooth from further damage.
If the infection in the root canal has spread too far and the tooth is very damaged, a dental crown can be created to cover and protect the tooth so you keep the full function of your teeth. And if a tooth has to be removed, an implant can replace both the tooth and root as a permanent dental solution.
