Root Canal Treatment at Melton
Experiencing severe tooth pain? At Melton Dental House, our experienced team provides root canal treatment to eliminate infection, relieve pain and save your natural tooth.
When Tooth Pain Signals Deep Infection
Severe tooth pain, prolonged sensitivity, swelling or persistent ache may indicate infection has reached your tooth’s nerve. At Melton Dental House, root canal treatment removes infected tissue, eliminates bacteria and preserves your natural tooth whilst relieving pain.
Understanding Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment (endodontic therapy) involves removing infected or damaged pulp from inside the tooth’s root canals, cleaning and disinfecting the space, then filling and sealing it to prevent reinfection. The tooth structure remains, though the nerve and blood supply are removed.
Each tooth has one to four root canals containing pulp (soft tissue with nerves and blood vessels). When bacteria enter through cracks, deep decay or damaged fillings, infection develops, causing pain and potential abscess formation.
Treatment typically requires one or two appointments. Despite its reputation, modern root canal treatment is generally no more uncomfortable than having a filling placed, as local anaesthetic numbs the area completely.
Could Root Canal Treatment Be Right for You?
At Melton Dental House, we believe every patient deserves individual attention. Root canal treatment may be necessary following our comprehensive assessment if infection has reached your tooth's pulp.
Your Root Canal Treatment Journey
Whilst individual needs vary based on infection severity and tooth anatomy, here's what you can typically expect:

Your Comprehensive Assessment
Our experienced team examines the painful tooth, takes X-rays to assess infection extent and root canal shape, and determines whether root canal treatment can save the tooth. (1 visit, approximately 45-60 minutes)

Treatment Planning and Preparation
We explain the procedure, discuss what to expect during and after treatment, administer local anaesthetic to ensure comfort, and isolate the tooth with a rubber dam. (Same visit, approximately 15-20 minutes)

Pulp Removal and Canal Cleaning
An opening is created in the tooth crown, infected pulp is removed, root canals are carefully cleaned and shaped, then flushed with antibacterial solution. (Same visit, approximately 60-90 minutes depending on tooth complexity)

Medication and Temporary Filling (If Needed)
If infection is extensive, antibacterial medication is placed in the canals and a temporary filling seals the tooth whilst infection resolves between appointments. (If required, allows 1-2 weeks for healing)

Canal Filling and Sealing
Once infection is eliminated, root canals are filled with rubber-like material (gutta-percha), sealed to prevent reinfection, and the access opening is closed with filling material. (Second visit if needed, approximately 45-60 minutes)

Crown Placement (Often Required)
Root canal treated teeth often need crowns for protection, as they become more brittle without blood supply and may fracture under chewing forces. (Additional appointments, timing varies)
Risks & Recovery
Root canal treatment involves complex endodontic procedures with specific risks and recovery considerations related to infection management and tooth preservation.
Possible risks include:
- Post-treatment pain and sensitivity, which may persist for days to weeks
- Incomplete removal of infected tissue leading to treatment failure or reinfection
- Instrument breakage or procedural complications during canal cleaning
- Need for retreatment, endodontic surgery, or eventual tooth extraction
Recovery considerations:
- Mild to moderate discomfort normal for several days following treatment
- Avoiding chewing on treated tooth until permanent restoration is placed
- Follow-up appointments essential for monitoring healing and completing treatment
- Long-term success depends on quality of final restoration and ongoing oral hygiene

Any questions?

Is root canal treatment painful?
Modern root canal treatment is typically no more uncomfortable than having a filling. Local anaesthetic numbs the area completely during the procedure. Post-treatment discomfort lasting 2-5 days is common but usually manageable with over-the-counter medication. The procedure relieves pain by eliminating the infection causing your toothache.
Can the tooth be saved?
Root canal treatment aims to save your natural tooth with 85-95% success rates. However, some teeth cannot be saved if infection is too extensive, structure is severely compromised, or root anatomy prevents adequate cleaning. Extraction becomes necessary if treatment fails or isn’t feasible.
How long will the treated tooth last?
Root canal treated teeth can last many years with proper care and crown protection. However, these teeth are more brittle and prone to fracture. Long-term success depends on restoration quality, oral hygiene, regular check-ups, and avoiding excessive force. Some treated teeth eventually fail and require retreatment or extraction.
