What Procedures Can Be Done Under GA?
General anaesthetic is most commonly used at Melton Dental House for more involved procedures such as All-on-4 implant surgery and wisdom tooth extraction. It is also available for more straightforward procedures such as fillings and professional cleans, where a patient’s clinical situation means treatment cannot be completed in the chair. The range of treatment that can be completed under GA in a single session is discussed and planned during the consultation stage.
The Two-Stage Assessment Process
Before any GA procedure takes place at Melton Dental House, two separate consultations are required — one with the treating dentist and one with the anaesthetist.
Stage One: Dentist Consultation
The first step is a consultation with your treating dentist to assess your current oral health, discuss all available treatment options, and develop a treatment plan. This includes confirming what procedures are needed and estimating the time required for each, which informs the planning for the GA appointment itself.
Stage Two: Anaesthetist Assessment
Once the treatment plan is confirmed, you will have a separate consultation with the anaesthetist. This assessment confirms that you are medically suitable for general anaesthesia before the procedure day is scheduled. Any questions about the anaesthetic process, what to expect, and how to prepare are addressed at this stage.
What Happens on the Day
On the day of your GA procedure, you will arrive at Melton Dental House and meet with both your treating dentist and the anaesthetist before the procedure begins. All planned treatment is completed while you are under general anaesthesia. Once you wake up and have been monitored through the recovery period, you are discharged into the care of the person who has accompanied you. A responsible adult is required to bring you to and from the appointment — you are not able to drive yourself on the day.
