What Dental X-Rays Can Show
Different types of X-rays provide different information about your oral health. Your clinician will recommend the appropriate type based on what needs to be assessed at your appointment.
Intraoral X-Rays
Small films are placed inside the mouth to capture detailed images of individual teeth. These show whether there is any decay developing between teeth, which is one of the most common areas for cavities to form. Intraoral X-rays also allow your clinician to assess bone height around the teeth, which helps identify early signs of gum disease.
OPG (Panoramic) X-Ray
An OPG, also called a panoramic X-ray, captures the entire jaw in a single image taken from outside the mouth. This gives your clinician a broad view of all your teeth, the position of any wisdom teeth, and the underlying structures of your jaw. An OPG is often recommended when a more complete picture of your oral health is needed, such as before surgical treatment or orthodontic planning.
How Often Are X-Rays Taken?
The frequency of X-rays depends on your individual clinical situation. For most patients, a set of intraoral X-rays is taken as part of routine six-monthly care. Your clinician will advise when X-rays are clinically indicated rather than taking them at every visit as a matter of routine.
