How the Crown Process Works
Melton Dental House uses a digital workflow to design and mill crowns, allowing the process to be precise and efficiently managed across your appointments.
Step One: Preparing the Tooth
Local anaesthetic is administered to numb the area before any work begins. The tooth is then shaped to create enough space for the ceramic crown to sit correctly. This preparation stage generally takes around 20 to 30 minutes. Your clinician will also ensure the planned crown aligns properly with your bite and surrounding teeth before moving to the design stage.
Step Two: Digital Design and Milling
Once the tooth is prepared, the crown is designed digitally using computer-aided technology. The design accounts for the shape of your existing teeth and the way your bite functions. The crown is then milled from a ceramic block in the practice. For patients interested in a one-appointment option, CEREC same-day crowns are also available at Melton Dental House — speak with your clinician about whether this suits your situation.
Step Three: Fitting the Crown
At the fitting appointment, the crown is checked for fit and bite alignment before being cemented into place. Your clinician will make any minor adjustments needed to ensure the crown sits correctly before it is secured.
Related Treatments
If a tooth cannot be saved with a crown, your clinician may discuss alternatives such as tooth restoration, a bridge, or a dental implant. All options will be explained clearly so you can make an informed decision about your care.
