Hi! Dr Jimmy here from Melton Dental House, part of the Dental House Group.
So, you’ve just had gum graft surgery. Or maybe you’re thinking about it, and you’re wondering how to take care of those grafts during recovery. Great question! Proper post-op care plays a huge role in both your healing and the final result.
Let’s walk through it together, shall we?
Right after the procedure, your mouth will be a bit tender, so gentle care is key. First and foremost, don’t disturb the graft site. That means no brushing or flossing directly around the area until your dentist gives the all-clear. Instead, use a dentist-approved antibacterial mouthwash to keep things clean without irritating the gums.
Next up, your diet. Soft foods are your best friend for the first week or two. Mashed potatoes, smoothies, scrambled eggs, yoghurt, so just about anything easy to chew and not too hot. Skip the crunchy, spicy, or sticky stuff that could cause trouble.

If you use tobacco, now’s the time to press pause. Smoking can seriously slow down healing and increase the risk of graft failure. We know quitting is tough, but even taking a break during recovery can make a big difference.
And here’s something you might not think about. Try to limit talking, smiling, and laughing, just for a few days! Excess movement can strain the surgical site, especially in the early healing phase.
Also, stick to your medications. Whether it’s antibiotics, pain relief, or a rinse, be sure to follow your dentist’s instructions closely. This keeps your recovery smooth and comfortable.
And lastly, don’t skip your follow-ups! These appointments let us check that everything’s healing the way it should and catch any issues early.
The better care you take of your grafts, the better they’ll integrate and heal. So go easy on yourself, be patient, and your smile will be back in action before you know it.
