Hi, I’m Dr Terence, one of the gentle dentists here at Dental House.

I saw a new patient, Olivia from Madingley. She came to see us because she noticed in the last few weeks her teeth were getting more sensitive to hot and cold food. During our consultation, she asked me, “Why do our teeth get sensitive and what can I do about it?”

Well, there are many reasons our teeth may get sensitive.
One, You may be wearing away your protective enamel without realising. This can be from brushing too hard or drinking too many acidic drinks such as juices, soft drinks and lemon water.
Something else that’s quite common nowadays is clenching and grinding. This often happens in your sleep. What this does is wear down the tops and the sides of our teeth and cause them to be extra sensitive.
You could also have a hole or a crack in the tooth. When this happens, the nerve gets irritated, resulting in lingering sensitivity or even sensitivity to hot as well.

So, What can you do about it?

Some tips you can implement immediately at home are; To switch to a sensitive toothpaste. These work by either applying a desensitising agent or a protective layer to the tooth. Now different brands work in different ways so you might have to try multiple ones until you find one that works for you.

You could switch to a softer toothbrush or, if you use and electric toothbrush, you can get one with a pressure indicator. This will make sure you are not overbrushing.

You could also limit your intake of acidic drinks. What acid does is wear away the enamel and the protective layer we get from the toothpaste.

What we highly recommend though, is a consultation with a dentist. They’ll be able to get to the bottom of it and find the root cause for the sensitivity, from this they can recommend the appropriate treatment.

This could be something as easy as changing some habits, they may recommend getting a nightguard, or sometimes, further treatment such as a filling might be needed.

The good news is, it’s a very common problem and in most cases it can be fixed easily under the right guidance.

Well, I hope this video gave you some insights to teeth sensitivity and what you can do about it. If you are experiencing teeth sensitivity, don’t ignore it. We would love to look after you.
