Hi, Dr Linda here from Melton Dental House, part of the Dental House Group.
Gum recession is something many people don’t notice until it starts causing real problems. But here’s the thing, the earlier we catch it, the easier it is to manage. So how can you tell if your gums are starting to recede, and what should you do if they are?
One of the earliest signs is tooth sensitivity, especially when you’re eating or drinking something hot or cold. You might also notice that your teeth look slightly longer than they used to, or you may feel a small notch along the gum line where the gum has pulled away. In some cases, there may be slight bleeding when brushing or flossing, which can also be a warning sign.
What causes gum recession?
There are a few common reasons. Brushing too hard with a stiff toothbrush is one. Gum disease is another. Genetics, teeth grinding, and even misaligned teeth can all put extra pressure on your gums and cause them to pull back over time.

The good news is that early intervention can make a big difference.
Using a soft-bristled toothbrush, brushing gently, and wearing a custom nightguard if you grind your teeth can help prevent further damage. If gum disease is involved, regular professional cleanings and targeted treatment can help restore your gum health and slow down the recession.
For more advanced cases, gum grafting may be recommended to rebuild the lost tissue and protect your teeth. But again, the earlier we act, the better the results tend to be.
So, if you’ve noticed sensitivity, your gums look a little different, or you’re just unsure, it’s worth having it checked.
