Emergency Dentistry at Melton

Emergencies happen, even dental emergencies. That’s why our team at Melton Dental has been supporting Melton and the surrounding community with emergency dentistry services for over 30 years and counting. We are here and ready to help you and your family with dental treatment at our facility so you can get the peace of mind you deserve.

Dental emergencies may be due to infection or accidents. They can include toothaches, swelling and bleeding, jaw pain, or trauma such as a cracked or broken tooth. Getting immediate treatment for a dental emergency greatly improves the chance of preventing further infections, preventing a more serious infection, or can even save a tooth.

Help for Dental Emergencies

Most dental emergencies come with pain, which can lead to panic or poor decisions. However, staying calm and knowing what to do can help you feel more in control. Unless the emergency involves a broken bone or profuse bleeding, dental emergencies are generally not handled at a hospital. The best thing to do is to contact a dentist since they have the skill to handle oral health issues.

If you have a dental emergency, the first thing to do is call our office and tell us you have an emergency. We will make your appointment a priority and if necessary, offer any guidance for what to do while you are waiting to see us. The following are some general guidelines that can help for a variety of dental emergencies:

Toothaches

Check the tooth to see if any food particles are trapped in or around the tooth. Rinse your mouth with mildly warm salt water. If the pain is very bad, over-the-counter pain medication may be used or some patients prefer a dab of clove oil on the tooth to ease the pain. Call our office right away and schedule an appointment so we can treat it right away. Even if the pain resides, a small cavity can quickly spread infection, even into the root, which will then turn into a larger problem that may require root canal therapy. Other home remedies include placing a warm, wet peppermint teabag on the painful tooth and gently hold it in place for a short time, apply turmeric paste on the tooth (made with turmeric powder and a few drops of water) to reduce pain and inflammation, or swish coconut oil around your mouth for a few minutes to relieve pain.

Jaw Pain

Jaw pain may arise for a number of reasons ranging from infection to tooth decay or even a wisdom tooth pushing on your other molars. Schedule a visit with us so we can take x-rays and treat the problem. While you wait, a warm or cool compress on the jaw area may help relieve the pain.

Chipped or Cracked Tooth

When a tooth is damaged there may or may not be a pain. If the pain is bad, an over-the-counter pain reliever may help. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to help relieve pain and lessen bacteria. Keeping your head elevated can help reduce pain, as well. Schedule a visit with us as soon as possible and let the receptionist know the details of your situation.

Broken Tooth

If a piece of your tooth breaks off, there may be a chance to save your tooth. Until your appointment, rinse your mouth with warm salt water then try bonding the piece of the tooth onto the remaining tooth with a temporary dental bond to stop sharp edges from hurting your cheek or tongue. We will do our best to save your tooth.

Facial Swelling and Pain

Swelling and pain can be due to a number of reasons such as gum disease, abscess, or infection. Keep your head elevated to keep swelling to a minimum. Over-the-counter pain medication and cool compress may help reduce swelling and relieve pain. Rinse with warm salt water to reduce bacteria and schedule an appointment with us. In many cases, the infection can be treated and teeth will be spared. The sooner you come in, the sooner the infection can be stopped from spreading.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Accidents happen and sometimes facial trauma can lead to a tooth being knocked out. In some cases, we may be able to save your tooth. To increase the chance of saving it, call and schedule an emergency dental visit with us as soon as possible. Then place the tooth in a container of full-fat milk and cover it, and bring it to your appointment with you. If you can place the tooth back into the socket without discomfort, then do so until you come for your appointment.
